Records Confirm FBI Targeted Occupy Protests, Categorized As Terrorist Activity

Records released by the FBI via a Freedom of Information Act request confirm earlier accusations of political policing regarding the Occupy movement. Even more disturbing, personnel within the FBI invoked the term “domestic terrorism”when referring to non-violent protests while also coordinating opposition to the protests with banks and other private firms.

The Partnership For Civil Justice Fund launched the FOIAs and has setup a webpage to review the documents. Some of the Highlights:

  • Documents released show coordination between the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and corporate America. They include a report by the Domestic Security Alliance Council (DSAC), described by the federal government as “a strategic partnership between the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the private sector,” discussing the OWS protests at the West Coast ports to “raise awareness concerning this type of criminal activity.”
  • The Jacksonville, Florida FBI prepared a Domestic Terrorism briefing on the “spread of the Occupy Wall Street Movement” in October 2011. The intelligence meeting discussed Occupy venues identifying “Daytona, Gainesville and Ocala Resident Agency territories as portions …where some of the highest unemployment rates in Florida continue to exist.”
  • The Memphis FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force met to discuss “domestic terrorism” threats, including, “Aryan Nations, Occupy Wall Street, and Anonymous.”
  • Jackson, MS Joint Terrorism Task Force issued a “Counterterrorism Preparedness” alert. This heavily redacted document includes the description, “To document…the Occupy Wall Street Movement.”
  • There are also odd redacted text blocks such as this: "(Redacted) planned to gather intelligence against the leaders of the protest groups and obtain photographs, then formulate a plan to kill the leadership via suppressed sniper rifles."

There are a lot more examples of Orwellian assessments as the FBI coordinated surveillance on the Occupy Movement from Alaska to Colorado to Florida. Though one report left me scratching my head:

The Federal Reserve in Richmond appears to have had personnel surveilling OWS planning. They were in contact with the FBI in Richmond to “pass on information regarding the movement known as occupy Wall Street.” There were repeated communications “to pass on updates of the events and decisions made during the small rallies and the following information received from the Capital Police Intelligence Unit through JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force).”

So now central bankers have gone past bailing out Wall Street criminals and moved on to spying on Wall Street’s political opponents? Does Bernanke get a gun?

But beyond the sheer inappropriateness of labeling activity protected by the Constitution as “criminal” and “terrorism” is a stunning truth – we have a police state. It is here and it needs things to do and Wall Street just happens to have some suggestions.
