Power Failure hits Fukushima Plant, Backup System Kicks In

The Liberty Beat

On Monday the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan saw another troubling moment as pumps used to inject cool water over damaged reactors saw a power failure that immediately kicked on a backup system. Tepco, the plant owner, pours hundreds of tons of water over the reactors on a daily basis in an attempt to keep them cool. The Fukushima plant has been been plagued with problems since earthquakes in March 2011 triggered a meltdown and explosions at the plant. In August Tepco found 300 tons of radioactive water had leaked from storage tanks.
