Portland, Maine Legalizes Recreational Use of Marijuana

The Liberty Beat

On Tuesday citizens of Portland, Maine voted to legalize possession of less than 2.5 ounces of marijuana for adults 21 and over. Although the measure begins in 30 days there is not a system in place for citizens to legally acquire the plant. After the vote Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck stated that federal and state laws on marijuana legalization “pre-empt local ordinances.” However, Sauschuck said that small-scale marijuana was not a high priority for his department.
