On Wednesday a coalition of more than 150 U.S. farm and food businesses and organizations asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to strengthen its oversight of field trials of genetically modified crops. The coalition, which includes the Organic Seed Alliance and the Rural Advancement Foundation International, has issued the call in response to unapproved GMO wheat from Monsanto that was discovered growing in the wild this Spring. Monsanto Co. stated that the wheat trials had ended in 2004 and 2005. The group is calling for tighter regulations and immediate halting of new GMO wheat trials. Monsanto said it stopped its experiments with the wheat in question in 2004 and 2005 and has no idea how the biotech wheat came to be growing in Oregon this year.
