On Monday US and French researchers published a new study showing more pest species are becoming resistant to the most popular type of genetically-modified crops, Bt crops, which are engineered to contain insect repellant. The study, published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, also shows that in areas where farmers follow expert advice to plant non Bt corn in “refuges”, resistance to the insecticides did not increase. The study examined 13 major pest species, five were resistant by 2011, compared with only one in 2005. The researchers warned that resistance to Bt crops was only a matter of time, as all pests eventually adapt to the threat they face.
