The latest leaks from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden have revealed the existence of a program known as XKeyscore which allows for indiscriminate searching through massive databases containing emails, online chats and the browsing histories of millions of individuals. The documents claim that XKeyscore is its “widest-reaching” system for developing intelligence from the internet. Beyond just emails the system enables analysts to observe internet users action in real time, including social media activity. Another tool called DNI Presenter also enables an analyst using XKeyscore to read the content of Facebook chats or private messages simply by searching the user name. These latest leaks have been revealed after the NSA declassified certain documents related to Edward Snowden’s previous intelligence leaks in an attempt to quell public criticism.
