Harris County District Attorney Announces Plan to Purchase Body Cameras for Houston Police

KPRC 2 Houston has reported that the Harris County District Attorney’s Office will be purchasing body cameras for police officers with the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. District Attorney Devon Anderson held a press conference announcing the plans on Friday afternoon.

The City of Houston has discussed body cameras in recent months following national protests for the murder of Ferguson teenager Michael Brown and New York man Eric Garner at the hands of police.

Houston had previously launched a pilot program to test out a small number of cameras on officers. Mayor Annise Parker and members of city council have supported the plan to attach cameras to officers.

There has been no word on whether or not the videos will be accessible by Houstonians or only the police department.
