FOOD NOT BOMBS! The Organization & The Benefit. Plus an Interview with Devil Killing Moth.

The Houston Free Thinkers coalition alongside the local music powerhouse that is Visionary Noise, have been providing Houston with some of the most electric benefit concerts this town has ever seen. With acts from every genre imaginable and some not, these two forces have helped raise money for dozens of local groups and organizations, while allowing the local music talent to shine. It is safe to say that the spotlight does not make those in this scene nervous. These shows also allow for important issues from the community to have a different outlet for their message and this show is no different. As we approach a possible war with Syria and Iran and as Houston law makers continue their war on the houseless via the feeding ordinance and more, what better time than now for the spotlight to be on Food Not Bombs Houston and their mission.

“Food Not Bombs recovers and shares free vegan or vegetarian food with the public without restriction in over 1,000 cities around the world to protest war, poverty and the destruction of the environment. Each group is independent and invites everyone to participate in making decisions for their local chapter using the consensus process. Food Not Bombs is dedicated to taking nonviolent direct action to change society so no one is forced to stand in line to eat at a soup kitchen expressing a commitment to the fact that food is a right and not a privilege. With over a billion people going hungry each day how can we spend another dollar on war?”

So in line with this message, “we will be throwing a benefit concert for our compassionate neighbors in FOOD NOT BOMBS. They service the homeless with sustenance and shared information, and for that we thank them. Please join us in our effort to support them.”

These shows also give local bands an opportunity to show fans that they care about community issues and organizations, as well as delivering kick ass tunes for everyone to enjoy. We got a chance to talk with the award nominated, local band Devil Killing Moth, who is playing the show and got them to answer a couple of questions related to Food Not Bombs and the concert.

Why we chose to play:
“Food Not Bombs is for the community and if we can help acknowledge a good cause and hopefully raise money to support this organization in furthering their cause then we help with our music.”

What is our stance on feeding ordinance:
“Nothing is far more cold than to deprive one from feeding another. To say that in my own right and without intent of harm, I stand unable to feed a fellow human being. Would I have to ask permission to feed my family if it means to eat with them as a form of sharing.” -DKM

If any of these messages or bands or ideas resonate with you or if you want to learn more about Food Not Bombs or The Houston Free Thinkers, please join us this Friday night at the show!
