Last week Facebook announced an update to the company’s data use policy that will work to improve the application of the “Tag Suggest” feature by adding facial recognition to users own profile images. Facebook Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan explained that adding public profile photos would give users better control over their own information, and stressed that the feature will include an “opt out” option which would not include the users public profile image in the facial recognition database. Although the technology is already applied to facebook friends profile photos this will be the first application on individuals own profile photos. Currently the feature is banned in Europe due to privacy concerns raised after it was introduced in 2011.
